Welcome to Workshop 1

Morning : Leading Self

“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

~Victor Frankl

One of the most important leadership qualities is emotional intelligence: the ability to understand and manage our own emotions and the emotions of people around us. We will explore how our lived and learned experiences and biases impact how we see and lead the world. We will learn a bit about how the human brain works and how it can sometimes short-circuit despite its highly evolved structure and share tools that help us respond more thoughtfully, resiliently, and effectively.

  1. Learn how self-reflection can help to define your future.
  2. Identify your own barriers to learning and how you can overcome them.
  3. Gain familiarity with the brain and how to avoid emotional “short-circuits.”
  4. Learn strategies for resilience and how mindset influences your outcomes.
  1. Watch How To Check Your Unconscious Bias – Dr. J. Eberhardt (8 min)
  2. Read Why Your Brain Hates Other People by Robert Sapolsky (10 min)
  3. WatchWhy Mindfulness Is a Superpower (3 min)

Great leaders are self-aware leaders.

Leadership is a life-long journey. It begins by understanding self. We all have natural strengths, blind spots, drives, and values that shape how we show up. Leaders who leverage their strengths and invest in cultivating and developing themselves to be their best are more effective in bringing out their best in others.

Increase self-awareness by exploring how values, behaviors, and needs impact others and influence leadership style. Leverage Predictive Index to deepen awareness of how individual needs relate to the needs of others to work most effectively together. Understand how the combination of one’s drives contributes to the team dynamic. Identify the behavioral type of the team and how to intentionally apply the team’s diversity to meet the department’s objectives. Learn how our lived experiences shape how we lead and how strengthening our emotional intelligence can improve leadership effectiveness.

Pre-Work

  1. Take the following assessment (if you have not already done so):
  2. Meet with your ClearRock coach for two coaching meetings as an introductory session and to debrief your Predictive Index BA and your EQ-i 2.0. (1.5 hours each)
  3. Read The Case for Emotional Intelligence (5 mins)
  4. Download Factors: Needs and Behaviors to use during the live workshop
  5. Review the following about the Predictive Index:

The Predictive Index Behavioral Assessment measures the motivations and drives of individuals in the workplace. This information provides insights into decision making, communication, delegation and comfort level with risk and helps to align individuals with jobs, managers, organizational needs and culture.

    There are four factors measured:

Dominance: the drive to exert influence and control over people and events

Extroversion: the drive for social interaction

Patience: the drive for consistency and familiarity

Formality: the drive for rules and structure

These four key factors – or key behavioral drives –  provide a simple framework for understanding workplace behaviors.

For additional information, read The Science Behind the Predictive Index, 2016; Annual CEO Benchmarking Report, 2022.
