5 Characteristics Employees Love about their Leadership

Ellie Eckhoff, SVP ClearRock

  1. They care. The best leaders care about their people – not only what employees need to do to perform, but what they want to do to excel. These leaders take time to get to know what drives their teams and what gets in their way. They create an environment where differences are celebrated, where people can move up, over and on to appropriately propel their career forward … because that’s what moves companies forward.
  2. They are confident. People follow those they trust and have the confidence to deliver results. Business is complex and demands a strategic mindset, balanced with input from key stakeholders. The best leaders have the confidence to assemble a team where innovation is cultivated, and the strengths and skills of each person are optimized for the greater good of the team and the customers they serve.
  3. They communicate effectively. Effective communicators provide a clear, concise and compelling message that is understood by everyone. Organizations thrive when the flow of information and ideas is consistent. The best leaders understand that “everything speaks” – from the way they walk into a room, to whether they make eye contact, to the way they listen and speak from their heart. They also understand communication goes both ways and create a safe space for people to share their feedback and ideas. Feedback is direct, supportive and two-way.
  4. They challenge people. Leading is a courageous act of stepping up, stepping out and sometimes challenging the status quo. Skilled leaders tackle difficult situations with optimism, balanced with reality. They champion people who are willing to challenge themselves. Investing in the development of their people is foundational to growing business. People are inspired by leaders who challenge them to learn, grow and change.
  5. They are curious. Ongoing learning is required at every level in the organization. Successful leaders don’t believe they have all the answers. They surround themselves with smart people and seek their input.  They know that asking a questions is more powerful than giving advice, especially when there are challenges to tackle. People admire those who are humble and curious, even when that person is “in charge.”
