Welcome to Module 2: Leading Self

Module Overview

Every great leader has many important qualities that make them successful.

One of the most important of these leadership qualities is a strong sense of self and the ability to use it to lead by example. It involves having a good understanding of who you are, where you want to go and what you can accomplish, along with having the ability to control your emotions and behavior in a way that guides you toward success.  All leaders face challenges and setbacks, but self-aware leaders have a strong ability to self-regulate; to respond effectively to challenges rather than reacting to them. Self-awareness is one of the key elements of emotional intelligence (EQ) a term that refer to a person’s ability to identify and manage their emotions and identify and influence others’ emotions.

As part of Module 2, we will take a brief look at the human brain, and how, despite its highly-evolved structure, it can sometimes short-circuit, resulting in a “reptilian” survival response.  We will give you tools to help you achieve more effective and thoughtful responses that use your well-developed cognitive skills.

We’ll also examine the concepts of beliefs and mindsets, and how these can either mislead us into thinking we have limited choices or open our perspective to a wide range of options. Finally, we’ll talk about how you can shift from being “Mind-Full” to becoming “Mindful,” and show up a leader who cultivates focus, clarity, creativity, and compassion in the service of others.  

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand how and why the way we experience and show up in the present is influenced by our past.
  2. ​Learn how self-reflection can help to define your future.​
  3. Identify your own barriers to learning and how you can overcome them.​
  4. Gain familiarity with the brain and how to avoid emotional “short-circuits.”​
  5. Learn strategies for resilience and how mindset influences your outcomes.
