Three Tips for Job Searching During the Holidays

Carolyn Raitt

Companies with job openings are still actively sourcing and interviewing candidates even during the holidays.  It’s common for individuals who are out of work during November and December to fall prey to the myth that companies won’t hire new employees during the holidays.  Actually, if a company has an opening and staff available to source and interview candidates, it is quite possible that candidates will be able to engage and even be pushed through quickly.  I worked for an organization that had a deadline of 12/31 for certain benefits enrollment which drove our desire to bring new employees in before year-end.  If others in the job market slow their search down, think about how much more of an advantage you could have if you continue to execute on your marketing plan, job search strategy, and follow-through.

A few things to remember:

  1. Go against the masses, don’t slow down.  Keep the pace of your job search steady which could be a big differentiator since those with whom you are competing may not.
  2. If you have already been interacting with a company, consider emailing your contact with a note wishing them well during the holidays.  This small gesture can help you stand out and show the prospective employer that you are motivated and dedicated in your search.
  3. Consider turning holiday gatherings into an opportunity to practice your networking techniques.  You will have a chance to tell people in a casual setting about yourself and what you are interested in doing.  Make sure to share your contact information through a business card or mobile device.  Send a note afterward if anyone you spoke with offered to make a connection for you.
